Hello readers! I just wanted to update you on my current living status. I have a new roommate- for the sake of this article I’ll call her Ruby. She is 70 and is a retired yoga instructor, hair stylist, Jazz singer, and multi-instrumentalist. She is an artist who paints and draws and is collaborating with a friend on a children’s book in addition to sitting for Rover. Ruby is also a cancer survivor.
She’s had a big life full of triumphs and challenges and it seems as though she’s just getting started!
That said, I’m not going to wax poetic about how great it’s going because truth be told, it’s new and I have no idea how it will all play out. What I do know is that Ruby has a big heart and great energy and I appreciate that about her. People like her tend to make people like me want to be the best version of ourselves, and I feel that is taking place already.
As many of you know, I’m big on energy- how sensitive I am to it and how another persons’ energy directly impacts my own. So when I knew she was moving in, I immediately began eating better and just taking better care of myself in general so as to be a better energetic match. Even if you balk at this concept, you can’t deny that the end result is a positive one!
The fact is, it can be downright scary to open up your home and in many ways, your life, to a stranger. References can be faked and first impressions are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many layers of someone’ s persona. It’s always going to be a gamble- regardless of one’s efforts in terms of due diligence. So for me, it ultimately came down to trusting my instincts.
That said, my hope is that we will learn from each other, lean on each other, and have mature, adult conversations when conflicts arise.
We’ve both had our share of not-so-great roommate encounters, so here’s hoping this one gets tucked away in the “better for having experienced it” file when all is said and done:)
